Year-end Camp on Newcastle Island June 2009
On the weekend of 12 - 14 June the Cubs joined the Beaver section for a family camp on Newcastle Island situated in the harbour of Nanaimo. The Cubs paddled canoes to and from the island and hiked the island from end to end. The group were also given a tour by a First Nations guide who explained the kinds of plants used by First Nations for a variety of purposes and she also explained some of the stories and legends about the island. The rest of the weekend was spent playing group games and spending quality time with the friends they had made throughout the year. All the Cubs and Leaders returned home exhausted after a truly memorable weekend.
2009 CIA Kub Kar Rally at Country Club Mall in Nanaimo.
We were joined by Cub groups from Parksville, Cedar, Departure Bay & Nanaimo for this annual event. The Cubs from the various groups make cars from wooden kits and race against the clock during a series of races until a winner is found. There is also a show car class for the more interesting models.
Council Commissioner’s Adventure Award
Three cubs, in the fall of 2007, began a program to complete the requirements to earn the Council Commissioner’s Adventure Award. The final activity was a backpack to Cape Scott Provincial Park at the northwest tip of Vancouver Island. The adventure involved four nights and approximately 40km of backpacking and wilderness camping and another 18km of day hikes. Four venturers, their advisor and two cub leaders also participated in the backpack.
